French scientists have been posted in Cape Town, in the framework of the international joint laboratories policy. Such postings are organised in two categories: long-term assignments (duration of 1 to 6 years) and short term assignments (2 to 3 months).

Overall, 19 French scientists (including 9 female) stayed in Cape Town in long-term assignments, making a total of 611 months of expatriation over 2009-2018. During the phase 1 of ICEMASA, up to 10 researchers were present at the same time in the partner laboratories (UCT, DEA and DAFF). Short-term assignments concerned 20 scientists and amounted to 57 months.

This expatriates personnel contributed to  substantially increase the manpower necessary to boost research and training activities in the south-african community of marine scientists.
