First ICEMASA Seminar, 9th November 2011

First ICEMASA seminar held at the University of Cape Town (UCT)

The first ICEMASA Seminar was held in the Oceanography Department of the UCT during the visit of the UBO delegation, on 9th November 2011. The main objective was to summarize the current status and achievements of the Education and Research programmes undertaken under ICEMASA.

This seminar was attended mostly by the MA-RE (Marine Research Institute) community, from the Oceanography and Zoology Departments of the UCT.

An outline of the ICEMASA French-South African initiative was presented by Francis Marsac (IRD). Then Steven Herbette (UBO) presented the training and educational activities. Finally, the research activities. covering various themes (physical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, ecosystem modeling, ecosystem effects of fishing and mesoscale eddies ecosystems) were presented by the different researchers of the group, including two PhD students.

Two south African scientists of the Dept of Oceanography presented two major research areas : the Southern Ocean (by Isabelle Ansorge) and the Greenseas project (by Howard Waldron).
